Palazzo  Angelo Giovanni Spinola – Genova

Via Garibaldi 5

WEB SITE     GALLERY

Started in 1558 by Angelo Giovanni Spinola, ambassador in Spain and banker of Emperor Charles V, the Palace was completed by his son Giulio, who enlarged the gardens , and decorated interiors and exterior walls with frescos.
Frescos of Façade and Atrium celebrate several members of the family, dressed as “ Roman commanders”, a clear allusion to the value and to the magnitude of their lineage.
Going up along a staircase frescoed as “grottesca” , you arrive in the First Noble floor, with celebratory frescoes painted by Andrea Semino, Bernardo Castello and Lazzaro Tavarone. One of them preserves the precious image of the Palace, as it was decorated in origin.

Sold by owners in 1919, the Palace was occupied by different Banks , that covered the courtyard and added the back-building, where once it was the garden (previously disappeared due to the creation of Piazza Portello).

The Palace is located in the central and historic Via Garibaldi (formerly Strada Nuova ) , and is part of “Palazzi dei Rolli”, a list of 42 ancient palaces in Genoa, declared “World Heritage Site by UNESCO” in 2006.
